Shawn Carter, known professionally as Jay-Z, will perform at the Super Bowl LXI halftime show in February. The NFL confirmed the announcement on Monday, ending speculation about the artist who has long influenced the selection process for the event.
Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has produced the halftime show since 2019. While he has played a central role in choosing performers for the past seven years, he has never performed on the stage himself. The announcement did not clarify whether he will be the sole headliner or share the stage with other artists.
The timing follows two concerts Jay-Z held at the Los Angeles stadium last weekend. Those shows were part of a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. The Super Bowl LXI is scheduled for February 14 near Los Angeles, making the local venue a logical setting for his debut on the championship stage.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he was excited for fans to experience the artist's cultural impact. Goodell noted that when he first agreed with Roc Nation to produce the show, he asked for one thing: that Jay-Z eventually take the stage himself whenever the moment felt right.
In a statement, the NFL suggested that speculation about guest stars would begin immediately. They noted that Beyoncé, Jay-Z’s wife, would likely be at the top of the list for fans hoping for a joint performance.
Jay-Z described the milestone as a dream come true. He said the journey from releasing Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl halftime stage represented thirty years of music and culture.
