Pope Leo will visit ten cities in South America beginning next month, according to the Vatican. The announcement came just two weeks after he underwent surgery to remove a lung cancer tumor.

The 71-year-old pope is scheduled to travel to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17. He will follow the original itinerary without changes. His journey starts in Uruguay on November 8, where he will visit Montevideo and other key cities.

After Uruguay, the pope will spend November 11 through 17 in Argentina. This segment includes a visit to Buenos Aires. He will then conclude the tour with six days in Peru, visiting Lima, Chiclayo, Cuzco, and Pucallpa. Approximately 76 percent of Peru's population is Catholic.

Cardinal Mario Dorner, the Archbishop of Lima, stated that the trip will include meetings with young people, women who manage community kitchens, and members of indigenous communities. The archbishop noted the pope's strong connection to Chiclayo, where Leo held Peruvian citizenship and lived for several years.

Leo was diagnosed with lung cancer in early October. He announced the news to pilgrims in St. Peter's Square on October 11, describing the growth as well-contained and caught at an early stage. Doctors found the cancer was localized. The 90-minute surgery took place in Rome on October 13.

Surgeon Stefano Margaritora said the pope is in an absolutely satisfactory clinical condition. There were no clinical reasons to cancel the tour. Leo was discharged from Gemelli Hospital on October 17. Since then, he has been resting and gradually resuming his duties while consulting with doctors on his daily schedule.

The Vatican stated the pope is looking forward to the trip with great joy and enthusiasm. He said he is eager to return to the continent where he has experienced many moments of his life. The Vatican also announced that Leo will cancel a planned trip to Assisi on October 27 on the recommendation of his doctors.
