Okaloosa County will lower the 990-foot SS United States into the Gulf of Mexico on Nov. 12. The vessel will rest at coordinates 30° 07.148' N, 86° 46.755' W, located 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Crews will begin operations at 10 a.m. on that day to create the world's largest artificial reef.

The ship departed Mobile, Ala., days before the sinking date. County officials stated that tourism revenue and partner contributions fully funded the project. The submerged liner will provide habitat for marine life and support local fisheries. It will also serve as a diving site.

The SS United States holds the record for the fastest ocean liner crossing, set in 1952. County officials plan to host a public sendoff ceremony on Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m. The event will take place at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Convention Center and include light refreshments.

On Nov. 12, AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar in Destin will host a live viewing party starting at 9 a.m. The venue will display the deployment on a large outdoor screen. Residents can also watch the event live online at thessus.com.

Officials expect hundreds of vessels to observe the deployment in person. Safety boats will station on site to guide bystanders. The Nov. 12 schedule depends on favorable weather. Authorities have not confirmed backup dates if delays occur.
