Jay-Z will headline the Super Bowl halftime show in February 2027, according to an NFL announcement. The gig carries a $25 million paycheck, a sum that reflects a 2019 deal between Jay-Z’s entertainment agency, Roc Nation, and the NFL to book the annual lineup.

He is the first act to secure the slot through such a direct arrangement. Roc Nation has curated the halftime talent for seven years, a role that allowed the agency to push rap to the forefront of the broadcast.

The announcement lands during a period of intense scrutiny for the artist. This year, Jay-Z has engaged in a rebranding campaign following a civil lawsuit that named him and Sean Combs as co-defendants in rape allegations. He vehemently denied the claims and pursued a defamation suit against filing attorney Tony Buzbee, which an appellate court recently dismissed. Combs denied the allegations and was sentenced to more than four years in prison on prostitution-related charges.

In March, Jay-Z told GQ senior associate editor Frazier Tharpe, “We played enough defense, 2026 is all offense.” Since then, he has changed his visual branding, removing the locs he grew for his daughter and deceased uncle. He also sold out three consecutive nights at Yankee Stadium.

During the first of those concerts, he addressed backlash over his exclusive vinyl reissue at Target, a move criticized amid a Black boycott of the retailer. He rapped a capella, “They say I sold out. Yeah, I did sell out. Three nights. I sold Yankee Stadium the hell out.”

Critics have debated his role in bridging Black culture and corporate power. Former hip-hop journalist Touré recently described Jay-Z as a “house Negro” used by powerful whites to quiet protests. Video essayist F.D Signifier labeled him part of the “Black misleadership class.”

In the final episode of the HBO documentary “Jay-Z in 8,” the rapper criticized race hustlers who act as extortionists. He stated, “We’re not getting it as a race together. We’re slowly getting there separately, but it’s not a concerted effort of us to align our powers and our finances to benefit our community.”
