HBO has confirmed the casting of James and Lily Potter for the upcoming fantasy series. Harry Gilby, Jasper Talbot, and Hannah Chinn have signed on to portray the parents of the main character, along with Charlie Weasley. These three actors will appear in the first season, which adapts the first book in J.K. Rowling’s series.
The decision to feature Charlie Weasley marks a departure from the previous film adaptations. In the movies, Ron Weasley’s older brother was a minor character who did not appear on screen. The television series includes him in Season 1, expanding the visual scope of the Weasley family for a new audience.
The Potter parents appeared in the film franchise primarily through flashbacks, photographs, and magical manifestations. Their roles in the source material were limited but essential to the origin story of the orphaned wizard. The new production will present their lives and deaths in a serialized format, allowing for more screen time and character development than the films provided.
The first season is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It is scheduled to premiere on HBO on December 25, 2026. The logline describes a story where a mysterious letter opens a door to a hidden world of magic. Harry must find the courage to prove himself against the darkest wizard of all, a plot point that drives the narrative of the initial arc.
Filming for the second season is currently underway at Leavesden Studios outside London. That season will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The production team includes writer and executive producer Francesca Gardiner. Mark Mylod serves as executive producer and director for multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling is also listed as an executive producer alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV.
The current cast features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow plays Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer portrays Minerva McGonagall. Other key roles are filled by Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The ensemble includes Warwick Davis, Sirine Saba, and Daniel Rigby in supporting roles.
Kit Harington will join the cast in Season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart. Bonnie Hill takes on the role of Ginny Weasley, and Rafe Spall plays Arthur Weasley. The series is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. David Heyman of Heyday Films and Laura Neal are also executive producers on the project.
