Formula One drivers competed at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on Sunday for the United States Grand Prix. Kimi Antonelli won the race to extend his championship advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell.
Antonelli started from pole position and finished the 56 laps in 1:35:16.650. Charles Leclerc from Monaco crossed the line in second place, 13.078 seconds behind the winner. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing finished third, 17.485 seconds behind Antonelli.
The win gives Antonelli a 123-point lead over Russell with five races remaining in the season. Russell must win the next race in Mexico City to remain in contention for the title. If Russell does not win, the championship will be decided in Antonelli's favor.
Strategy played a key role in the outcome. While other teams made two pit stops, Antonelli stayed on track until lap 25. He made a single stop and did not return to the pit lane. Antonelli said the one-stop strategy was a team effort and called it a perfect way to end the weekend.
A Virtual Safety Car was triggered on lap 52 when Valtteri Bottas's Cadillac stopped on the track. The car remained in effect until the penultimate lap. By that time, no driver was positioned to catch Antonelli.
Mercedes also increased its lead in the constructors' standings. The team now has 607 points, while Ferrari has 474. This gives Mercedes a 133-point advantage over Ferrari.
Antonelli has won both United States races on this year's calendar. He previously won five consecutive Grands Prix earlier in the season, including in Miami. The Las Vegas Grand Prix is scheduled for November. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff described the performance as the best race Antonelli has produced so far. Wolff noted that Antonelli controlled the race despite starting with the inferior tire.
